The ATEX Directive

The ATEX directive applies to protective systems and equipment, intended for use in an explosive atmosphere. It applies to all electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and any control, monitoring and safety devices that contribute to the safe operating of protective systems and equipment.

ATEX is the name of two European Directives that control potentially explosive atmospheres.

Prescribes the minimum in health and safety requirements of protective systems and equipment, intended for use in a potentially explosive atmosphere.
Brings together Legislation in Member States and is aimed at manufacturers.

Prescribes the minimum safety and health requirements of the workers exposed to the risks of explosive atmospheres.

An Explosive Atmosphere

This is an atmosphere that has the potential to become explosive due to the local and working conditions. Defined as a mixture of air, along with inflammable substances such as gases, vapours, mist or dust in which, after ignition, combustion spreads to the entire unburned mixture.
